You have been looking at Catherine's work the entire time you have been on this site. You just have not seen her.
She is the fourth girl, the one who does not sing, and in some ways the easiest of the group to believe in, because every real band has a member like her. The one in the credits instead of the photos. Catherine is 20, a fashion design student, and the hands behind most of what the other three wear on camera. When a look on this site stops you, there is a decent chance it existed first as a sketch in her notebook.
The Name
Catherine has red hair, genuinely and unmistakably red, and it did what red hair does to a kid's social life: it named her. Somewhere in school, Catherine with the red hair became Mars, the red planet, and Mars got respelled the way kids respell things, and Marz stuck. Her family calls her Catherine. Almost everyone else has called her Marz for years. Like the others in this group, her everyday name and the name near the music turn out to be the same thing.
San Jose
She grew up in San Jose, the same city as Sammi, and the two of them share more than a hometown. They work together at the ramen shop, Sammi out front pouring and serving, Catherine alongside her through the same shifts, the same regulars, the same late nights when the place turns into a neighborhood bar. A lot of this group's history got talked through across that counter after close. If the band has an unofficial headquarters that is not a garage, it is that shop.
The Craft
Catherine studies fashion design at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where she met Lena, and the two have been trading eyes on each other's work ever since, the painter and the designer. Her major is fashion, but her range runs wider, into costume and prop design, the built-object side of dressing a world. She is the kind of student who can sketch a garment, pattern it, sew it, and then make the necklace and the set piece that go with it, and that range is exactly why the group leans on her the way it does.
Because dressing this group is a real job. The styled looks you see in Asami's photographs, the custom pieces built for shoots, the alterations that make a vintage find sit exactly right on camera, that work runs through Catherine. The girls will tell you plainly: she is the reason they look the way they look. Her taste is all over this label's visual world, worn by everyone but her.
Behind the Camera
Catherine does not sing, and has never wanted the microphone. When Lia pulled the girls together to make music, Catherine's answer was the same as it has always been: she would rather build the world than stand in it. She is the group's designer, its prop maker, its extra set of hands on every shoot, and one of its closest-kept friends.
There was a moment, once, when she was going to step out front with the others. It did not happen, and the reasons are hers. What we can tell you is that the group does not treat her as staff or as a footnote. She is the fourth girl, full stop, and the fact that you cannot find her face does not make her less real. It makes her the one who chose.
You will only ever get first names from us. The girls keep their full names to themselves, and we think that is exactly how it should be.
